A life of healing and learning
Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said (1920–1998) established Hamdard Pakistan in 1948. Within a few years, the herbal medical products of Hamdard became household names — a legendary part of Pakistan’s business history.
The name Hamdard acquired a still wider meaning when he founded Hamdard University in 1991, fulfilling a lifelong dream to enliven the intellectual tradition of Muslim civilization’s educational institutions.
Apart from being a great educational leader, he was one of the finest exponents of eastern medicine, treating millions of patients from Pakistan, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East by the time of his martyrdom in October 1998.
In recognition of his meritorious services he was awarded Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Posthumous) by the Government of Pakistan in 2002. A prolific writer and conference organizer with UNESCO and WHO, he created Hamdard Shura and Naunehal Assembly — and stewarded Hamdard University into one of Pakistan’s leading institutions of higher learning.
